Tijdens deze studienamiddag, georganiseerd door het Interdisciplinair Centrum Religiestudie & Interlevensbeschouwelijke Dialoog (Prof. dr. Bert Broeckaert) in samenwerking met het Koerdisch Instituut vzw, zal Prof. Mamou Farhan Othman (in het Engels) dieper ingaan op het yezidi-geloof, het yezidisme historisch en geografisch situeren en de actuele situatie van de yezidi’s belichten. Ere-senator Hugo van Rompaey geeft een korte inleiding over cultuur en religie van de Koerden.
Het yezidisme is een zeer oude syncretische godsdienst die in zijn huidige vorm elementen uit het zoroastrianisme, de islam, het christendom en het jodendom verbindt. Beschuldigd van duivelaanbidding waren de yezidi’s in het Midden-Oosten door de eeuwen heen vaak het slachtoffer van vervolging. Men schat dat er mondiaal tussen de 200 000 en 500 000 yezidi’s zijn. Yezidi's worden beschouwd als etnische Koerden die konden weerstaan aan de druk om zich te bekeren tot de islam.

During this afternoon conference, organized by the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Religion and World View (Prof. dr. Bert Broeckaert), in cooperation with the Kurdish Institute vzw, Prof. Mamou Farhan Othman (in English) will dilate upon the Yezidi faith, will give a historical and geographical overview of the Yezedi religion and will discuss the actual situation of the Yezidis. Former Senator Hugo Van Rompaey will give a short introduction on the culture and religion of the Kurdish people.
Yezidism is an age old syncretic religion that in its current form combines elements from Zoroastrism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Often accused of worshiping the devil, throughout the ages the Yezidis have been the target of persecution in the Middle-East. The Yezidis have been estimated to a number o 200.000 and 500.000 people worldwide. Yezidis are considered to be ethnic Kurds that could resist the pressure to convert to Islam.
