Research Unit of History of Church and Theology - Middle Ages

The focus of the investigation into the Middle Ages (Rob Faesen) lies mainly on the mystical tradition in the Low Countries, a primordial concern for the faculty's Institute for the Study of Spirituality.  Research is performed on the specific place of the central mystical authors from the Low Countries, such as Hadewijch, Beatrijs of Nazareth, Jan of Ruusbroec, in their broader European cultural, historical, and theological context.  Furthermore, investigation is directed to the not yet studied Middle-Netherlands texts, such as the text: The Hague, K. B.  133 H 13, that contains mystical texts.  For such research, there is regular cooperation with the Ruusbroecgenootschap (University of Antwerp).
