Newman and Truth - Theme of the conference

John Henry Newman (1801-1890) chose as his epitaph the words, 'Ex umbris et imaginibus in veritatem' ('Out of shadows and images into the truth'). These words are more than the expression of Newman's hope for the future. They summarise his lifelong quest to penetrate ever more deeply into the mystery of God's relationship to humankind and the way in which men and women are able to gain insight into that relationship.

The fourth Oxford International Newman Conference aims to reflect on Newman's understanding of the nature of truth and the challenges to its survival in the contemporary world. At the same time it endeavours to provide a critical reflection on the continuing significance of Newman's thought. These themes will be addressed from an interdisciplinary perspective by specialists in the fields of theology, philosophy, history, literature, and education.

This Confererence is organised as part of the ongoing research project, Orthodoxy: Process and Product, undertaken by the departments of Systematic Theology, and the History of Church and Theology, of the Faculty of Theology of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, under the auspices of the 'Research Council' of the university.
