PhD Title

The Possibility of Asian Christology.

Short Description

The distinctiveness of the Asian context is described as the interplay of two main realities: the many poor and the many religions. If Christology is deemed to truly respond to such a context, it must therefore be designed in a distinctively Asian fashion. Claiming the peculiarity of the context, various Asian Christological attempts - most prominently by Aloysius Pieris and Choan-Seng Song - have suggested that Christology for Asia must take its lead from the Asian (non-Christian) context. Here underlines an intriguing yet disturbing plea for the theological legitimacy of these attempts. The nature of this doctoral project is therefore an enquiry into the theological adequacy of such a claim and its challenges to traditional Christology.
