Christian Self-Understanding and Interreligious Dialogue

Description

The research conducted in this group revolves around two major poles and the interaction between them, namely, (1) Christian self-understanding, and (2) the attempts by Christian communities and particular Christian theologians to promote, and provide a theological foundation for, the practice of interreligious dialogue.

The two poles of research identified above are clearly related and, while they can be distinguished, ought never be divided. Indeed, one of the propositions on which the research in this group is founded is that interreligious dialogue can only be meaningful when it is informed by an adequate understanding of Christian truth-claims. The clarification of these claims and the way in which they function within the life of faith is, then, one of the major objects of the research within the group. At the same time, the group also adheres to the proposition that the promotion of  interreligious dialogue is both a requirement arising from Christian faith and a vital element in the unfolding of Christian self-understanding. While, therefore, each research goal can be, in one sense, an object of pursuit in its own right, their common pursuit is both desirable and fruitful.
