Colloquium Jan van Ruusbroec in the context of History of European Devotion
Organisation: ENID (European Network on the Instruments of Devotion) and the Institute for the Study of Spirituality
In collaboration with ENID (European Network on the Instruments of Devotion), University of Bergen, Norway, the Institute for the Study of Spirituality organised a congress entitled: “Jan van Ruusbroec in the context of History of European devotion”. The congress took place in the Oude Abdij of Drongen from October 30th to November 3rd, 2006. On Tuesday, October 31st, the participants visited the Ruusbroecgenootschap and the Mayer van den Bergh Museum in Antwerp. On Wednesday, November 1st, following lectures were given:
• The Image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the Crucial Element of Visual Identity of Modern Catholicism, by Dr. Ewa Klekot, University of Warsaw, Poland;
• Trinity in the Works of Jan van Ruusbroec, by Lieve Uyttenhove, Ph.D. Candidate, Faculty of Theology, KULeuven, Department of the History of Church and Theology, Institute for the Study of Spirituality;
• Presentation of on-going doctoral research, by Dr. Trevor Johnson, Ph.D. Candidate, Oxford University, U.K., and Eli Heldaas Seland, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Bergen, Norway;
• Chapels in Flanders. Presentation and slideshow, by Prof. Dr. Hans Geybels, Faculty of Theology, KULeuven, Department of Systematic Theology.

On November 2nd, in the evening, a visit to the famous Lamb of God was organised in the Sint-Baafs Cathedral in Ghent. It was guided by Prof. Dr. Peter Schmidt, Faculty of Theology, KULeuven, Department Interdisciplinary Centre for Religious Studies. Afterwards, there was a small city walk, followed by the Evening Mass in the Sint-Jacobs Church. On Thursday November 2nd, a guided tour was organised to a temporal exhibition in the Gruuthuse museum of Bruges, entitled “Faith and Fortune”. It was introduced and guided by Prof. Dr. Jos Koldeweij, Faculty of Arts Radboud University of Nijmegen, Netherlands, Department History of Arts of the Middle Ages.
