Textual Criticism and New Testament

  • The projects of Joseph VERHEYDEN concern the study of Old Testament quotations and allusions in the New Testamen and the reception of the Old Testament in the early Church. At the moment, he is involved in a research project with regard to the reception of the Old Testament in the Gospels (in collaboration with B.J.Koet, Tilburg/Utrecht) and he plans a project on the Old Testament and Justin Martyr.

Textual Criticism and Qumran Studies

  • The projects of ET are situated in the domain of the Dead Sea Scrolls, from the perspective of Judaism in the Second Temple Period. More specifically speaking, he is interested in the copying of biblical manuscripts in that period and in the question into the way in which 21st century biblical texts and other early Jewish texts should be edited (cf. his contribution “Editing the Hebrew Bible: An Overview of Some Problems.”). Moreover, he is involved in the edition of Isaiah and Ezekiel within the project of Biblia Qumranica. Finally, another aspect in his research pertains the different Dead Sea Scrolls and their classification. In this respect, he guides the doctoral research of Arjen Bakker into the relation of the wisdom text 4Qinstruction to the other Dead Sea Scrolls.
